ASCENT PROGRAM
This program allows students to delay official high school graduation for one year, and attend a participating college/university during their “5th year” of high school. ASCENT provides the opportunity for a student to delay their official high school graduation for one year in order to enroll at Colorado Mesa University/WCCC or a participating institution in a degree or certificate program with the tuition paid for by the school district. The credit hours for which the student is eligible to enroll is contingent upon the funding the District receives from the State.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the ASCENT program:
-Meet all high school graduation requirements
-Complete 12 college credits by the end of their senior year
-Earn a cumulative GPA in the college courses of 2.5 or better
-File a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form
-The college enrollment is part of the student’s ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan). The ICAP outlines the student’s career goals and aligns his/her high school coursework with future plans.
-Agrees to delay high school graduation for one year
If the above criteria are met, the student may be eligible for the ASCENT program.
This program is funded through the State of Colorado, and funding is not guaranteed. The District will fund tuition at either part-time or full-time rates. It is vital that students and families understand that the ASCENT program is contingent upon state funds, and these funds are allotted each summer. Students are strongly advised to apply for admission, scholarships, and financial aid to the college(s) of their choice.

GRADUATION CAP GOWN & INVITATIONS
All Seniors planning on participating in graduation ceremonies must order a Cap & Gown. To submit your order for Cap & Gown as well as invitations and additional swag to celebrate your momentous achievement, please pick up a package in the Central High School main office or Counseling office. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Guidelines for Requesting Recommendation Letters
- Two letters from teachers is adequate. Choose one academic instructor.
- One letter from a community person (employer, mentor, etc.) is a good third.
- Always give the person an updated resume to use!!
- Allow a week to 10 days for the person to write the letter, and then check.
- Ask for a copy to use for other applications.
- Check the letter for accuracy, neatness, and proper English before you send it.
- Use the Letter of Recommendation Request Form available in Counseling (or click on link below) to submit to the person, along with your resume.
- Never ask the same person twice for a letter. If you have college forms that teachers need to complete, attach a copy of the letter they have written for you to the form, and submit the check form to the teacher to complete and send in a stamped, addressed envelope.
- Letters of Recommendation should rarely be addressed to a specific school, or person. You should be able to use the letter for all schools, employers, or scholarship and other opportunity applications. Be sure to inform the person recommending you that you intend to use the letter for all of the above in the future, even after your high school graduation.
- Remember to thank the person who wrote you a letter of recommendation! This is a time consuming and very challenging task for the people you ask. They deserve an expression of your appreciation - it makes a difference! Remember, all counselors write recommendations for all college applications - they need a resume and an expression of thanks as well!

Scholarship information is available from a variety of sources and now is the time to start your research! Scholarships are updated as they arrive and includes a compilation of the newest opportunities. Please continue to check back periodically to make sure that you don't miss any of the newest opportunities.

If you need further assistance or have any questions please contact your counselor.
As well, check with your individual colleges for their list of institutional scholarships. Parents and students should be aware that there are companies that will offer to supply scholarship information, or even guarantee that you will win an award, if you pay them a fee. These scams may look and sound legitimate, but you should never pay money for a list of scholarships, and no service can guarantee you scholarships. Watch for warning signs like: a fee, a "money-back guarantee," or a request for your credit card or bank account.

This website provides you with an opportunity to increase your knowledge of the financial aid process; become familiar with the various types of federal student aid that are available; and investigate other sources of aid, such as grants and scholarships. For families whose senior is applying to private colleges who request the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA, we recommend that parents speak directly with the colleges' financial aid office, as the CSS Profile asks for more financial information than the FAFSA.
